It’s Not Too Late to Join the Conversation About Primary Runoff Elections on June 21

There’s still time to join my Telephone Town Hall event this Wednesday, June 21, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. You’ll have the opportunity to ask me questions or share your thoughts on my proposal to create a primary runoff election system in Pennsylvania and other state-related issues that are important to you. I will also provide information about important legislation and topics that may affect commonwealth residents.

The call will enable us to interact just as we would at a traditional town hall meeting – except you don’t have to leave your home.

Touring Hands Across the Street Tour

I was in Columbia recently to thank volunteers and learn more about the work of Columbia Hands Across the Street, located at the Columbia Dream Center. The volunteers at this program serve the community through food, shelter, clothing, and resources. They are a partner agency of the Pennsylvania Food Bank.

Thanks to Sgt. Eric Schmitt for 33 Years of Service

Congratulations to Sgt. Eric Schmitt upon his retirement from the Ephrata Police Department, concluding 33 years of dedicated service spent protecting the safety and welfare of his fellow citizens.

Sgt. Schmitt also served this country with honor and distinction as a member of the United States Army for three years and the Pennsylvania National Guard, 28^th Military Police Company, for five years.

Congratulations and best wishes to Sgt. Schmitt!

Lancaster EMS Works to Keep Communities Safe

Thanks to Lancaster EMS Executive Director Bob May for talking with me about some of the unique fiscal challenges confronting our EMS providers. Lancaster EMS serves more than 260,000 residents in urban, suburban, and rural portions of Lancaster County. It is the busiest EMS provider in Lancaster County and answered more than 39,000 requests for service in 2020.

I am grateful for the important work our EMS providers and personnel do in communities throughout Lancaster County.

Discussing Lancaster County Workforce Development

I appreciated the opportunity to discuss workforce development and the work of the Commission on Education & Economic Competitiveness with the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board. The CRL Steering Committee and several other workforce organizations attended. I also toured the Workforce Development Board during my time there.

Watch Out for This Rental Scam

The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General warns people in the market for rental properties to be aware of sophisticated scammers placing fake ads and altering existing, legitimate ads to obtain personal information, security deposits and rent payments.

Protect yourself by being wary if you cannot physically see the property. Avoid purchasing gift cards for payment, providing your Social Security number without verifying with whom you are dealing and wiring payments for application, security deposit or first month’s rent.

General Fund Tax Revenues Below Estimate Again

Each month, the Senate Appropriations Committee prepares an update about the state’s financial health. The most recent report shows that General Fund tax revenues were $90.7 million lower than the monthly estimate in May, the third time in the past five months that tax revenues have failed to meet projections.

For the 2022-23 Fiscal Year, which ends June 30, Personal Income Tax collections are nearly $400 million below projections.

Helping Nonprofits and Local Governments Stretch Investment Dollars

Nonprofits and local governments can take advantage of an investment opportunity offered by the Pennsylvania Treasury Department. The program, known as INVEST, is similar in concept to money market funds and offers two short-term pools and custom options.

For more than 30 years, INVEST’s performance has matched or exceeded that of its competitors. INVEST offers daily liquidity and has no minimum balance requirements. More than 260 entities – like townships, school districts, counties, volunteer fire companies, libraries and other nonprofit organizations – have assets of approximately $1.317 billion in INVEST portfolios.

Local Students Visit PA Capitol

Students from New Holland Elementary School in Eastern Lancaster County School District, Highland Elementary School in Ephrata Area School District, Lancaster Country Day School, and Fulton Elementary School in Ephrata Area School District made the trip to Harrisburg to tour the State Capitol Building and learn about how their government works.
