Shapiro Breaks Promise to 250,000 Vulnerable Students
Pennsylvania Award for Student Success (PASS) Scholarships would help more than 250,000 children trapped in the 15% lowest performing public schools. They would give life-changing opportunities to students in school districts like Columbia right here in Lancaster County. Gov. Josh Shapiro openly and unambiguously proclaimed his support for school choice programs like this during his campaign. He also said he wouldn’t take a dollar out of Pennsylvania’s public schools to achieve school choice, so my colleagues in the Senate and I created a separate item in the budget to honor his request of not taking a single penny from public schools. Despite all this, he broke his promise to the people of Pennsylvania to instead satisfy the leftish progressive wing of his party. Students are still counting on us. The event will be an opportunity to ask state-related questions and share your perspective in a casual setting. It will be held at Roland Memorial Park, 221 N. 11th St., Akron. Congratulations to Chief Edward Cunningham on his retirement from Elizabethtown Borough Police Department after 28 years of service! Chief Cunningham helped create the SecondChancePA pre-arrest diversion program, which trains police officers about the science of addiction. Thanks to Chief Cunningham for his years of dedicated service to the Elizabethtown community! Weight Limit on Route 462 Veterans Memorial BridgeA weight limit has been established on the Route 462 Veterans Memorial (Columbia-Wrightsville) Bridge over the Susquehanna River connecting the Borough of Wrightsville, York County and the Borough of Columbia, Lancaster County. The new restriction will limit the weight of each vehicle to 10 tons except for emergency vehicles permitted by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). Vehicles exceeding the posted weight limit are suggested to use Route 30, an approximate nine-mile detour, or an alternate route. PennDOT will enact a truck detour for Route 462 to assist routing trucks safely across the river. Trucks traveling eastbound from the Wrightsville (west) side of the river should take eastbound Route 30 to the Prospect Road exit, then turn right and head south to Route 462. Trucks traveling westbound from the Columbia (east) side of the river should take westbound Route 30 to the Route 462/Wrightsville exit, then turn left and head south to Route 462. The weight restriction was implemented after a routine inspection uncovered deterioration to the primary load carrying members of the open spandrel concrete arch spans along portions of the bridge. PennDOT is working toward interim repairs to the bridge and will re-evaluate the posting while repairs are being made. The weight restriction will reduce strain on the bridge and will preserve safe passage until more significant interim repairs can occur. Given the necessity to change the design scope of work on the bridge – now potentially including bridge deck, floor beam, and column replacement – work on the bridge for the permanent condition is not anticipated to occur until 2025. The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is holding two free statewide webinars to assist college-bound students and their families with navigating the financial aid process. Speakers will discuss how students and families can take advantage of PA Forward, which is Pennsylvania’s state-based private student loan option offered by PHEAA. The first webinar, Deep Dive into Covering the Gap, will be held Tuesday, July 25, at noon. The second, Borrowing for Education – Which Loan is Right for Me?, will be held Thursday, July 27, at 6:30 p.m. Register to attend the one-hour webinars here. How to Conserve Water During Statewide Drought Watch
The Department of Environmental Protection declared a statewide drought watch and is encouraging residents and businesses to voluntarily conserve water by reducing nonessential water use. Some ways to limit water use include watering the garden less frequently; sweeping your sidewalk, deck or driveway instead of hosing it off; and running the dishwasher and washing machine only with full loads. Read more water conservation tips here. The current drought declaration status, by county, can be found here. “Be the One” Initiative Addresses Veteran Suicide Crisis
The top issue facing our veterans today is suicide. On average, we lose 17-22 veterans to suicide every day. To address this crisis, the American Legion and Chip Ganassi Racing have partnered for the “Be the One” initiative. If you are a race fan, you may have seen the Ganassi #10 Honda displaying the American Legion’s “Be the One” logo at the Indy 500. “Be the One” is such a simple, yet effective, way to combat veteran suicide by ending the stigma. Learn more about how to help a veteran in crisis here. Beware of Unsolicited Emails Claiming to be from PA Treasury
Online scams are a constant threat. Lately, there have been sophisticated phishing emails imitating the Pennsylvania Treasury Department circulating. The messages include a link to what appears to be Treasury’s website, but instead leads to a fake version that prompts users to enter log-in credentials. The Pennsylvania Treasury Department will never ask you to share personal information through unsolicited emails or text messages. If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department or have questions, contact Treasury through its secure website. Celebrate National Ice Cream Month on PA’s Ice Cream Trail
July is National Ice Cream Month – a wonderful time to enjoy Pennsylvania’s Ice Cream Trail at a great creamery. With locations across the state, you’re sure to find an ice cream destination in your area. They’re often family owned and support the local community by using locally sourced, high-quality ingredients.
