In this Update:
Coffee and Conversation with Rep. Mindy Fee on Sept. 9Rep. Mindy Fee and I will be hosting a Coffee and Conversation event on Monday, Sept. 9, from 9-11 a.m. at Listrak, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. To stay connected with people in the district, I host regular events to discuss the issues that are most important to Lancaster County communities. If you prefer informal conversation over a big town hall-style meeting, then this event is for you. In addition to the opportunity to chat casually about what’s happening locally and in Harrisburg, there will be light refreshments. Learn more and RSVP to attend here. Thank You to Girl Scout Troop 70724 for Their Community ServiceGirls from Troop 70724, a multi-level troop from Lancaster County, made an impact at Camp Furnace Hills while working on their Bronze Award. They planted trees and flowers donated or provided at a discount by Lancaster Farmacy, Longview Nursery, TN Nursey, and a troop family. Their interest in improving the trail was sparked during a discussion about deforestation while the troop was camping and working on their Agent of Change journey. The girls – Addyson, Caylee, Cheyenne, Chloe, Clara, Lyla, Sara, and Willow – along with leaders Brandy Laukhuff and Molly Swan, agreed that the camp could benefit from more native trees to provide additional animal habitats. Sen. Noah Wenger Memorial Highway Dedication Ceremony to be Held Sept. 22You are invited to join Sen. Scott Martin and me for a highway dedication ceremony where we will rename a portion of U.S. Route 222 in honor of the late Sen. Noah Wenger and his service to Lancaster County. The dedication ceremony will be held rain or shine on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. It will be in the back parking lot near the baseball field. For more information, please call 717-627-0036 or 717-397-1309. Supporting Services in Our Local CommunitiesProviding Pennsylvanians increased access to important health care and emergency services from birth to older age was a key priority of Senate Republicans as we worked to implement the 2024-25 state budget. I am pleased that, because of our efforts, neonatal and obstetric services provided through the Medical Assistance Program are receiving an additional $7 million to help support mothers and their babies. In addition, the enacted budget also includes a $134 million increase for nursing home facilities. To benefit people of all ages, an additional $20 million was dedicated to emergency medical services (EMS) rates. Quality and reliable health care must reach every corner of our commonwealth, which is why we worked to ensure the final budget agreement also included a $10 million supplemental payment for rural hospitals and $17.5 million for rural health redesign and distressed hospitals. We believe in the promise of Pennsylvania and strengthening our local communities through these substantial investments. Free Dental Day on Sept. 13 in Garden Spot for VeteransGarden Spot Dental Care is hosting a FREE Dental Day for veterans on Friday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its location at 101 W. Main St., New Holland. They’ll offer exams, X-rays, cleanings, fillings, and oral surgeries. To reserve your appointment, please call 717-354-3200. Walk-ins will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Please bring your veteran ID. A Closer Look at Efforts to Improve Water QualitySenate Republicans have led efforts in Pennsylvania to ensure access to clean water now, and to preserve this critical resource for future generations. Supporting clean water in Pennsylvania communities benefits our downstream neighbors as well. This year’s state budget includes $50 million in recurring funding for the Clean Streams Fund, which helps farmers reduce sediment in waterways through the Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program. To date, the program has supported more than 700 projects to reduce sediment in waterways throughout the state. Because of the initiative, water quality has improved in Pennsylvania and downstream. In fact, the Chesapeake Bay recently earned its best rating in more than 20 years in the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science Chesapeake Bay Report Card. See what else Senate Republicans are doing to make Pennsylvania a great place to live and work here. Financial Assistance is Available to Struggling VeteransSometimes the people who defended our country fall on hard times and need a little help. Veterans who are experiencing unforeseen circumstances causing a financial burden can benefit from the Veterans Temporary Assistance (VTA) Program. The VTA provides temporary financial assistance of up to $1,600 in a 12-month period to veterans or their surviving spouses who reside in Pennsylvania for basic necessities like food, shelter, fuel, and clothing. Eligibility guidelines are available here. Veterans interested in applying for a VTA grant should contact their county director of Veterans Affairs.
