PA Voters Return Senate Republican Majority

Pennsylvania voters returned a Republican majority to the state Senate in Tuesday’s General Election, re-electing all Republican incumbents and sending new Republican senators to Harrisburg.

Senate Republicans will hold the majority in the 2025-26 legislative session. Newly and re-elected senators will be sworn into office to begin their four-year term on Jan. 7, 2025.

Working together, Senate Republicans will continue to be steadfast in our work to empower Pennsylvanians by standing against executive and judicial overreach, rejecting Democrats’ massive tax increases, and ensuring the fundamental rights of our Commonwealth’s citizens remain safely guarded.

New Law Makes Workers’ Comp More Efficient

The Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation system will be more efficient because of legislation unanimously passed by the Pennsylvania Senate that is now law.

Act 126 of 2024 moves more benefit payments from paper checks to direct deposit. Individuals entitled to compensation may request funds be deposited into an account of their choosing. The law also allows insurers to no longer have to offer paper checks as a payment as long as the individual has a bank account that accepts direct deposit.

The reforms, which are also more cost-effective, were unanimously recommended by the Workers’ Compensation Advisory Council.

East Hempfield Coffee and Conversation

Nearly 50 constituents joined me for an in-person Coffee and Conversation event in October at the East Hempfield Township building in Landisville. I provided an update from Harrisburg before taking questions from the audience. We discussed Pennsylvania’s emergency response preparation, election integrity issues, firearms, higher education costs, daylight saving time, and energy issues.

Shooting Ranges Open to the Public

Whether you’re a hunter preparing for rifle season or would simply like to maintain your shooting skills for self-defense, you can take aim at a public shooting range.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission offers recreation opportunities at public rifle, pistol, archery, and shotgun ranges on 40 state game lands throughout the state. It constructed or renovated more than a dozen public shooting ranges this year alone, with plans to upgrade more.

You must possess an annual shooting range permit or a current general hunting or furtaker license to use the public shooting ranges. Find a shooting range near you.

Fish and Boat Commission is Accepting Boating Facility Grant Applications

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has two grant opportunities for qualifying organizations to capitalize on the surge in new boating activity.

The Boating Facility Grant Program provides grants for planning, acquisition, development, expansion, and rehabilitation of public boating facilities on PA waterways. Townships, boroughs, and municipal and county governments can learn more and apply online by Nov. 30.

The Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation (R3) Grant Program will reimburse up to $25,000 for eligible expenses that support R3-related educational programs and increase learning opportunities for anglers and boaters. Learn more and apply online by Dec. 6.

Honoring Our Flag, Veterans, and First Responders

Building Bridges Foundation and Jay Reynolds and Company hosted a beautiful ceremony to honor our flag, veterans, and first responders. I was pleased to join Rep. Steve Mentzer and Commissioner Josh Parsons for the ceremony. The flag measures 30’ x 20’ and has been placed just off Route 272, south of Willow Street, on the grounds of Jay R Reynolds Inc.

A healthy, vibrant community respects and honors those who sacrificially serve. I am proud to live in Lancaster County where we honor our flag, veterans, and first responders!

Touring Goodwill Keystone Logistics Facility

Thanks to Goodwill Keystone Area for giving me a behind-the-scenes tour of its Middletown logistics facility. I learned about Goodwill’s sustainability efforts and commitment to growing its outreach and mission services. In Lancaster, that includes workforce development, Women of Wealth (WoW) program, and re-entry services.

Happy 100th Birthday to Elizabethtown Resident

Happy belated 100th birthday to Elizabethtown resident, Paul Rider! Born in Middletown in October 1924, Mr. Rider worked as a warehouse manager and church custodian. He enjoys completing puzzles and singing, and he was once a member of a barbershop quartet.

He was the beloved husband of Mildred Rider for 74 years prior to her passing and the proud father of three children. He also has been blessed with two grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Congratulations, Paul.

Recognizing Local Agriculture Advocate: Caleb Miller

Continuing my series highlighting the young men and women who are active in Lancaster County agriculture, please meet Caleb Miller, who has served on the Pennsylvania Farm Show Junior Committee for three years. He was born and raised in Lancaster County on his family’s farm. Caleb was active in 4-H for a decade, showed cattle for six years, and served as the president in the Red Rose Beef Club for two years. The cattle he raises from birth are shown at three local shows throughout the year and have had notable success.

Caleb graduated from Thaddeus Stevens in the spring and has been working full time and supporting his ag family. As a member of the Junior Committee, he hopes to be a point of contact for exhibitors and visitors.

Recognizing the Selfless Sacrifice of Veterans

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day is a time to appreciate the brave men and women who selflessly dedicated their time to preserve our beloved American freedoms.

We also think of their families, who lived with the understanding that their loved ones could be in harm’s way and may not make it home.

These tremendous sacrifices are truly the ultimate demonstration of patriotism, and for that, we owe our veterans a debt of gratitude.
