Veterans Appreciation Breakfast Honors Those Who ServedMany thanks to Brig. Gen. John R. Pippy, Pennsylvania’s acting adjutant general and head of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, our keynote speaker; Jennifer Vazquez, who sang the National Anthem to open the program; the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard; Pastor Grover Devault; and the staff of the Eden Resort for helping to honor our veterans at my annual Veterans Appreciation Breakfast. Manheim Township Unified Track and Field Wins Another State TitleThese outstanding students on the Manheim Township Unified Track and Field team won their second consecutive state title earlier this year! The team won first place in the Unified Team Rankings during the 2024 PIAA State Track and Field Championships. It was a privilege to honor their impressive accomplishments with official PA Senate citations. Go Blue Streaks! Sports Barber Bike Collection Benefits Toys for TotsSports Barber in Ephrata set a new record this year of 423 bikes collected for Toys for Tots! Thanks to Eric Bair, Marine veteran and owner of Sports Barber, for coordinating the collection, and thanks to all who donated to this important cause. Eric has helped with Toys for Tots for 14 years by collecting bikes so children wouldn’t have to choose between toys or a bike. All the bikes stay in Lancaster County and benefit our communities. Elizabethtown High School FFA Teams are Headed to the National ExpoCongratulations to the Elizabethtown High School FFA, which won two first place titles during the 2024 Pennsylvania State FFA Association Career and Leadership Development Events. The Agriculture Sales and Floriculture teams will be headed to the National FFA Convention and Expo! The Agriculture Sales Team won by researching corn and soybean seed varieties and participating in a simulated sale to a customer. The members of the team demonstrated knowledge of which seed varieties would best meet the customer’s needs. Under the expert guidance of advisor Stephen Geib, the team was comprised of Mya Ellis, Cami Lewis, Aleigh Shenk, and Faith Musser. The Floriculture Team, with others from across the state, identified more than 100 plant and flower species, as well as tools, equipment, and materials used in the floriculture industry. It also created floral centerpieces with provided materials within the budget. Under the expert guidance of Advisor Mark Anderson, the team was comprised of Calista Bryant, Kylie Hottenstein, Natalie Ott, and Ellia Spang. Warwick High School Field Hockey Team Wins State ChampionshipCongratulations to the Warwick High School Field Hockey Team for winning the 2024 PIAA State Class AA Field Hockey Championship! They defeated Northern High School with a score of 4-0 and ended their season with a record of 23 wins and only one loss. Impressive Local Marching Bands Win Championships
Congratulations to the Donegal High School Marching Band for winning the 2024 Cavalcade of Bands (CBA) Independence Open Class Championship! This win marks the band’s second consecutive CBA title. It earned 94.75 points with its program “Look to the Stars.” It also won awards for high overall effect, best visual performance, and best auxiliary unit.
Congratulations to the Hempfield High School Marching Band for winning first place in the Patriot Open Class during the 2024 Cavalcade of Bands! The band placed first in their class with a score of 95.5 and won awards for high music, high visual, high effect, high color guard, and high percussion. Best Wishes to Local Advocate in RetirementMaureen Westcott is retiring from The Arc Lancaster Lebanon after a 27-year career of distinguished service. She began as a public policy advocate and finished as the executive director. In both of those roles, she increased opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Under her leadership, The Arc stabilized its funding and updated its infrastructure by partnering with organizations for technology support and website and fiscal management. Best wishes to Maureen in her well-deserved retirement! Congratulations to Natalie Kling on Becoming Miss PennsylvaniaCongrats to Manheim Township’s very own Natalie Kling for securing the title of United States of America’s Miss Pennsylvania. Natalie will compete for the title of United States of America’s Miss PA in May 2025, and we will all be cheering her on! Happy 100th Birthday to Lancaster ResidentHappy belated 100th birthday to Lancaster resident Jerome Forrest! Jerome served this country as a member of the U.S. Army during WWII. For his bravery and dedication, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Following his military service, Dr. Forrest worked as a dentist. He was the beloved husband of Lenore for 72 years and is the proud father of three children. Mr. Forrest was blessed with nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Best wishes to Jerome and his family! Honoring Two Distinguished Public Servants Upon Their RetirementCongratulations to Mike Weaver and Tim Baldwin upon their retirement from Lancaster County-Wide Communications (LCWC) after distinguished careers in public safety spanning more than 30 years. Sen. Scott Martin and I had the privilege of honoring the service of these two great men and wishing them both a happy and relaxing retirement. Mr. Weaver served as director for many years and supervised the absorption of Lancaster’s law enforcement call-taking and dispatching activities into LCWC, led efforts to improve the countywide radio system, and advocated for passage of important legislation – including language to create statewide training standards. Mr. Baldwin served as the deputy director for 32 years. He managed many infrastructure, staff, and technology projects, including relocating the 911 center to its current location. He also helped to provide automated external defibrillators to all county law enforcement agencies and was involved with many 911 legislative initiatives. Dayspring Christian Academy Students Debate for Senior ProjectIt was a privilege to again participate as a guest panelist in the Dayspring Christian Academy senior U.S. government class political party project. The students were exceptional, and the debate was civil and engaging. Well done! Visiting the ELANCO Library’s New Kids’ AreaThe Eastern Lancaster County Library in New Holland has a newly renovated children’s library that you can check out with your toddlers, kids, and teens. Susan Burke (president of the Library Board of Trustees), Anna D’Agostino (library director), and Len Reinsfelder (vice president of the Library Board of Trustees) showed me around the new space. I even got to try out one of their educational mouse dissection kits! Plan your visit and learn more about the ELANCO children’s library here. Talking with Millersville University StudentsIt was great to be back at Millersville University to speak with student teachers in the Issues in Secondary Education class taught by Marian Pontz. These students are the future of education in Pennsylvania! Happy 40th Anniversary to WJTLHappy 40th anniversary to WJTL-FM 90.3! This Christian radio station based in Manheim serves as a place for listeners to connect with one another, their community, and their faith. It was my privilege to honor this occasion by presenting WJTL with a PA Senate citation. WJTL had humble beginnings. It was first housed in a renovated chicken house across from Lancaster Bible College before moving to a new location on the Oregon Pike in the 1990s. It relocated to its current home in 2011. Since the beginning, it has focused on the needs of the community it serves. Mount Calvary Christian School Students Offer Engaging ConversationThe students in Mr. Josiah Jones’ Career Opportunities classes at Mount Calvary Christian School in Elizabethtown asked some very engaging questions and kept me on my toes during my recent visit. It’s always a pleasure to visit the excellent schools we have across Lancaster County. Optometric Associates’ Renovation is Ready to Serve PatientsThanks to Dr. Jonathan Andrews, owner of Optometric Associates in New Holland and optometrist, for a fantastic tour! The newly renovated facility is equipped to serve patients’ needs. One wall in the building is dedicated to the history of New Holland and Optometric Associates, which was founded by Jonathan’s father, Dr. Wolfram Andrews. Meeting with Journey Home School Civics ClassI had the pleasure of meeting with a group of Journey Home School students recently as part of their civics class. It was great to hear their perspectives and talk with them about Pennsylvania state government. Wenger Group Hosts Legislative LuncheonSpecial thanks to The Wenger Group – a leading, family-owned agricultural products and services organization – for hosting the Lancaster Legislative Delegation for lunch at its new headquarters in East Hempfield Township. Touring the Ephrata National Bank History RoomI was back at the Ephrata National Bank building to take a deeper dive into its rich history and see some of its historical artifacts and showcases. Back in September, I visited the bank during my Mainspring of Ephrata tour of downtown Ephrata. Many thanks to Jeffrey Stauffer – who is the president, CEO, and chairman of Ephrata National Bank – for this special tour of the Historical Documents Room. Learn more. Students See Their Government in ActionLancaster County students have been traveling to Harrisburg to tour our beautiful and historic state Capitol building and learn more about how state government works.
